Mr. McNally's premise for "Lips Together" reaches back to "The Ritz," his early bathhouse farce, for its fundamental fish-out-of-water gag is to inject heterosexual characters into a gay milieu. But how times have changed in two decades! The heterosexuals of "Lips Together" are enlightened -- in varying degrees, up to a point -- about homosexuality, and they co-exist at a cordial distance with the occupants of the houses on either side of their own.

"Lips Together" is as much about what the hetero- and homosexual communities -- or at least those of the white middle class -- have in common in an infected, diminished civilization as it is about what sets them apart.
